Ferndale schedules sewer smoke testing for September 21–25

Ferndale Public Works plans to test sanitary sewers September 21–25 in neighborhoods north of Thornton Road and west of Vista Drive. The city says the work will help locate places where groundwater or surface water enters the sewer system.

Crews will introduce a smoke-like vapor that the city describes as non-toxic, odorless and non-staining. It may emerge from roof vents, yards, manholes or other locations. Vapor from roof vents is an expected part of the test.

Residents can run or pour water into seldom-used sinks, showers and floor drains to fill their plumbing traps. The city says that can help prevent testing vapor from entering buildings.

Weather and field conditions may change the schedule. The city advises calling 911 if someone cannot tell whether smoke is from testing or an actual fire. Public Works can answer other questions at 360-685-2379.
